Band 8+: The overuse of social media platforms has been linked to a rise in cyberbullying and online harassment, particularly among young people. What factors contribute to this problem, and what solutions can schools, parents, and social media companies implement to create a safer online environment?

The excessive use of social networking sites has increasingly been associated with cases of cyberbullying and digital harassment, especially among the younger generation. This essay will discuss the main factors that lead to this growing issue and suggest several effective measures that schools, parents, and social media companies can take to make the online space safer for everyone. One of the main reasons for the increase in cyberbullying is the anonymity that social media provides. When individuals can hide their real identities behind fake accounts, they often feel less responsible for their actions and are more likely to behave aggressively online. In addition, the lack of strict regulations and moderation on many platforms allows harmful content to spread quickly without consequences. Another contributing factor is peer pressure among young users, who sometimes engage in online harassment to gain popularity or fit into certain social groups.

To tackle this problem, several measures can be taken by schools, parents, and social media companies. Firstly, schools should educate students about online ethics and the emotional impact of cyberbullying through workshops and counselling programs. Parents also play a crucial role by monitoring their children’s internet activity and encouraging open discussions about their online experiences. Furthermore, social media companies must strengthen their security systems, use artificial intelligence to detect abusive content, and impose stricter penalties on users who violate community guidelines. By working together, these groups can create a safer and more respectful online environment for young people.

In conclusion, the rise in cyberbullying among young people mainly results from online anonymity, weak platform regulation, and peer pressure. However, by providing digital education in schools, promoting parental supervision, and enforcing stricter policies on social media, it is possible to reduce these harmful behaviours. A collective effort from all parties is essential to ensure that the internet becomes a safer and more supportive place for the younger generation.
