It is true that the impact of advertising on consumers has reduced noticeably in recent years. The main contributors to this situation are the increased number of advertisements and skepticism. While I understand that the decreased influence of advertising brings a few disadvantages, I believe that consumers generally benefit from this tendency.
There are several reasons why consumers are becoming more resistant to advertisements. One chief reason is the growing number of advertisements. With the rise of digital media, especially social networks like Instagram and Facebook, consumers are bombarded with advertisements daily, leading to ad fatigue. Nowadays, many people use ad blockers or just skip ads altogether because they are tired of following ads. Skepticism could be another reason for this. There is no doubt that not all advertisements are reliable and trustworthy. Many consumers often come across fake ads, resulting in dissatisfaction and disappointment. Thus, people lose their trust in not only exaggerated ads but also useful ones.
On the one hand, this situation can be negative for several reasons. One negative aspect of this is over-reliance on peer reviews. Since people are no longer influenced by advertising, they have no other option but to read online reviews before purchasing something, especially during online shopping. If consumers rely on these reviews, they are more likely to be manipulated. Moreover, this trend can affect small businesses. As it is difficult to become popular among consumers without advertising, they may struggle to get their businesses off the ground, especially in industries dominated by established players.
Despite the arguments above, I think that it is a positive development. Firstly, manufacturers begin to focus not on advertising but on the quality of their products. Since advertising is no longer an effective way to increase their sales, they have to produce better-quality products to keep their clients. As a result, this can drive innovation and improve standards across industries. Secondly, consumers would be less interrupted if there were not so many attractive ads in every aspect of their lives. Consequently, people begin to make more conscious decisions when they are buying something. For example, according to statistics conducted by psychologists at the Marketing Institute, when people see an ad at the entrance of a supermarket, they are more likely to buy that product, even if they do not want to.
To conclude, there are clear reasons why advertisements are becoming less effective. Although this trend has several negative aspects, like over-reliance on peer reviews and difficulties in starting new businesses, I believe that it is a positive development due to the increased quality of products and consumer awareness.
