Band 6+: The research indicates that nowadays some consumers are less influenced by advertising than in the past. What are the reasons and is it a positive or negative development?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In contemporary society, despite the growing influence of advertising, people are less dependent on this as a means to opt for products. This shift is attributed to several prominent factors and its implications are viewed as both positive and negative.

One primary reason is that the overwhelming amount of advertisements no longer can change people’s minds. In the past, when the advertising industry started developing, people were bombarded with advertisements, which sometimes blurred the line between work and entertainment. As a result, they tended to block or eliminate the advertisement so as not to cause disruption, leading to the reduction in the overall impact. Moreover, since the training programs are implemented to raise awareness of individuals about repercussions of advertisement, they are persuasive that advertising may manipulate them into impulsive decisions. That is why they start making autonomous decisions instead of relying on advertising.

Admittedly, the decrease in the impacts people have on advertisements is not without its advantages. This trend encourages companies to produce high-quality products, meeting the satisfaction of the overall consumers. As a result, businesses can increase a large amount of revenue instead of waiting for the returns on the investment in marketing. Also, this can help the industries gain recognition on the national stage due to their attempts to upgrade the product catering to the needs and wants of consumers.

However, the decline in advertising effectiveness may come with the unemployment of media and content creators. Owing to the reduced funding for this industry, this could lead to the increasing risk of unemployment which imposes a financial burden on employees. As a result, they tend to overdepend on government welfare systems. Moreover, several companies have difficulty in accessing their potential consumers. Because people have limited exposure to advertisements, businesses have no way to familiarize the general public with the new products.

In conclusion, the decreased influence of advertising is caused by several factors as discussed in the essay. Additionally, despite the aforementioned benefits, I believe that the decreasing number of advertisements is largely a negative development. Therefore, it is imperative that individuals adopt a balanced approach to mitigate its adverse effects while harnessing its potential.
