Digital art is getting increasingly well-known, and its popularity has surpassed that of traditional ones such as painting and sculpture. I believe that it does more harm than good.
Admittedly, the uprise in the popularity of digital art definitely has a positive impact on many industries. As such art focuses on being convenient and eye-catching rather than being insightful and creative, it has benefited the advertising and designing industry, which need to captivate people’s attention. The same is true for work and education as in slideshows, documents and websites, where digital art can help to illustrate information. And most importantly, digital art achieves its greatest success in the entertainment sectors such as films, games and short videos. This is the most evident in many animated movies, whose revenue is so tremendous that rarely any traditional artwork can compare.
Nonetheless, the rise of digital art can be detrimental to how people recognise art. With the introduction of even more state-of-the-art devices, tools and programs that aid people in making art, people can produce art on digital platforms if they are capable of handling such equipment. As a result, natural artistic talent is sometimes neglected and traditional pieces of art are also losing their value due to digital art flourishing , which takes less time to make. Additionally, because such types of art exist in an online environment, without a license or watermark, they are prone to art plagiarism and their creators may not receive the attention and money they deserve. Artificial intelligence, for example, has been exploited to mass produce low quality images referred to as “AI slop”, which have severely affected the art industry and how young children perceive art.
In conclusion, although digital art has undeniably profited many sectors such as advertising, education and entertainment, it has seriously affected how people perceive art and undermined the value of original artworks. I contend that the disadvantages of this trend outweigh the benefits.
