It is often argued that science should prioritize improving human society rather than pursuing other goals. In my perspective, I agree with the statement that the most important aim of science is to benefit people’s lives.
Research for humans can be a strong motivation in different areas of science. The results that we use nowadays are all designed for humans as the major reason, such as smartphones, transportation, or phone applications. For instance, the reason why cars have been invented is to solve the need for sustainable transportation. The benefit of the research ultimately benefits society. The solution always comes with a question at the beginning, and the question is often what humans have struggled with.
Most of the problems in the world are related to humans. This relationship has led to the innovation of technology. As a master’s student at university, my biggest goal is that my study can contribute to human beings, no matter the contribution is small or big, that is the lesson I learned from my supervisor. For example, there are a lot of technological equipment that could support disability, such as deafness, or the people who lose their voices. Scientists base on these issues and come out with the solution. Although the result might not be perfect, ultimately it will improve people’s lives.
In conclusion, an aim can drive and affect research direction, and the strongest motivation is to solve the problems of humans. Finally, the science results will improve people’s lives and benefit the world.
