Recent advancements in technology has played a pivotal role in most organisations to transition to remote work. This has been a significant trend in recent years. While remote work does offer it’s benefits, however, they do come at a cost. This essay discusses both the advantages and disadvantages of the shift in the trend of working from home.
The advantages of remote work are two fold. This work model benefits both the employees and the organisations. For the employees, they get to save time and costs particularly involved in travelling whereas in the latter case, the organisations save operational costs such as electricity, supplies or in some cases fixed costs like rent which in turn adds up to the company’s profits. For instance, a report from Times, March 2025 edition states that companies were able to decrease their expenses by atleast 10% by switching to remote work.
While it has its advantages, the trend does have cons related to it most of which are intangible. One such disadvantage is the lack of productivity amongst employees. For some employees, working from office gives them a chance to network and makes them feel more productive. A random survey posted on Twitter indicated that employees between the age of 21 to 29 prefer working from office as they get a chance to network.
With the improvements in technology and modernisation, it is difficult to assess if all the organisations would completely switch to remote work. However, it is imperative to balance out the benefits and negative impacts of switching to this model.
