Band 8+: The roads in major cities today are often difficult to travel on. What are the causes of this situation ? What is the solution ?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There is a growing trend where roads in major cities are becoming increasingly difficult to travel on. While this can be largely attributed to the rising number of private vehicles and inefficient public transportation systems, I believe that this problem can be effectively addressed by improving urban transport infrastructure and promoting alternative modes of travel.

One compelling reason why traffic congestion is a serious issue in cities can be the rising number of private vehicles. With rapid urbanization and increasing incomes, more people are purchasing cars, leading to overcrowded roads. This, in turn, can lead to longer travel times and higher levels of air pollution. Another factor contributing to this problem extends beyond the increasing number of cars to inefficient public transportation systems. As buses and metro services are often overcrowded, unreliable, or poorly connected, people prefer using personal vehicles, which further worsens congestion. A perfect case in point would be megacities like New Delhi or Jakarta, where poor public transport networks force residents to rely heavily on private cars and motorcycles. Therefore, an excessive number of private vehicles and underdeveloped public transport infrastructure can be the major driving forces behind traffic congestion in urban areas.

To tackle the growing issue of traffic congestion, it is imperative for governments and city planners to take decisive action by improving urban transport infrastructure and promoting alternative travel options. Since many commuters rely on private cars due to inefficient public transit, expanding metro networks and improving bus services will counteract this by making public transport more reliable and convenient. To ensure effective implementation, authorities should introduce carpooling incentives, develop cycling lanes, and invest in smart traffic management systems. By doing these initiatives, urban traffic congestion can be successfully mitigated.

In conclusion, traffic congestion in major cities is primarily caused by the increasing number of private vehicles and inefficient public transport systems. However, by investing in better urban transport infrastructure and encouraging alternative modes of travel, cities can significantly reduce congestion and improve overall mobility.
