Shopping becomes a general behavior in our modern life, and people begin to develop different taste when choosing a variety of goods. To some extent, people at certain age period may tend to buy similar items, but I generally do not agree that our shopping habits will be certainly affected by age, and believe that it usually is determined by other factors.
On the one hand, there are dozens of reasons to explain why people buy different product, which are more persuasive than age difference. Firstly, gap between people’s income is the main reason to explain difference in shopping habits. To illustrate, richer people are more affordable in buying expensive goods than poorer people. A millionaire can purchase luxuries, but a tramp can only afford inferior goods such as instant noodle. So if those poor people go into the chain store, they will only walk into the sector that sells cost-effective product that those affluent people definitely won’t consider to buy. Secondly, people with opposite characteristics and aesthetic values usually purchase non-identical goods. It is understandable that a more rational person tend to buy more practical goods with simple decoration, and an emotional person prefer to buy goods with more beautiful decoration. An old lady can dress with colorful clothes, and a girl can also wear clothing with black and white. It does not depend on age.
On the other hand, people in similar age may have something in common, shopping habits are one of the examples. To begin with, in each age period, people have similar needs. Children want toys, adults will get daily necessities frequently, and elderly people would more likely to purchase health products. Apart from that, Age leads to different shopping mindsets. youngsters tend to purchase impulsively, but middle-aged people are usually more sensible when consuming. Overall, age gap still have impact on people’s purchasing behavior.
To sum up, although age can influence people’s shopping behavior, I still stand on my point that it is not the predominant factor.
