Band 9: The tendency of news reporters in the media to focus more on problems and emergencies than on positive developments is harmful to the individuals and the society as a whole. To what extend do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The reporting of negative news, particularly in terms of social problems and emergencies, has been on the rise in recent years, which is deemed to exert adverse consequences for both individuals and society. I completely disapprove of this argument for several reasons.

On an individual scale, frequent media coverage of negative news can serve as a means to cultivate personal growth. To be specific, continual news about unwanted situations, such as social injustices or climate change, can genuinely reflect the urgent circumstances of the reality without exaggeration or concealment, enabling citizens to have a more comprehensive understanding of their surrounding world. This can prompt them to engage in proactive and practical actions through participating in various community activities, thereby protecting themselves, as well as others and the natural environment, from further deleterious repercussions. For instance, due to the constant news coverage of the current environmental crisis, more dwellers have adopted a sustainable lifestyle with meaningful actions, encompassing consuming eco-friendly products and participating in volunteer campaigns to clean public areas, which has positively contributed to environmental improvement.

On a larger scale, a focus on bad news might result in several benefits contributing to drastic social development. Opponents of this view argue that frequent exposure to news about undesired problems, such as ever-increasing crime and poverty rates, can trigger a sense of insecurity and anxiety among the public, thus leading to social instability. Nevertheless, this practice, in fact, can foster dwellers’ perception of and precaution about the severity of such detrimental issues in order to undertake decisive measures, particularly putting a strain on governments, to address them. This is the case when media agencies report a substantial increase in serious accidents involving teenagers, public anger has imposed pressure on the authorities to promulgate stricter rules for transportation in recent years.

In conclusion, I personally believe that disseminating negative news plays a pivotal role in both individual and societal development. While individuals are better informed of undesired repercussions to take proactive actions, governments should be pressured to implement appropriate measures to prevent and mitigate the consequences.
