Band 7+: The top priority of businesses is making money, and they do not need to have social responsibilities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The perspective that enterprises should focus solely on generating profits without considering social responsibilities is a considerably debated topic. While I partly agree that this perception is somewhat justifiable, I believe that incorporating social responsibilities is equally essential.

On the one hand, maximizing profits is not only crucial for businesses but also might be beneficial to society as a whole. Firstly, the higher the substantial revenue generated by companies, the more taxes paid they contribute significantly to the economy. Accordingly, these taxes enable governments to invest in key fields, such as infrastructure, healthcare, and education, thereby possibly improving the quality of the overall societal well-being. Secondly, focusing on profit-making would lead to positive economic outcomes. To be specific, as firms grow and expand their operations, they create job opportunities within the community, which may reduce unemployment rates and improve many individuals’ living standards, especially allowing the underprivileged to stand a greater chance of getting an occupation in those corporations.

However, there are a host of compelling reasons as to why I am convinced that it is equally vital for businesses to implement corporate social responsibility. One reason is that businesses should shoulder their responsibilities to protect the environment because their activities often contribute to adverse environmental degradation. For instance, just by adopting eco-friendly practices seriously, companies could mitigate their negative environmental impacts, such as water contamination and air pollution created through factory emissions and. Additionally, enterprises have the financial capability to help people in need through philanthropic actions. For example, major corporations, namely Unilever and Vinamilk, have engaged in humanitarian efforts, such as providing scholarships and giving charitable donations, which not only benefits society but also enhances these company’s reputation and builds consumer trust.

In conclusion, while it is irrefutable that producing profits is of paramount importance for businesses, I would contend that they should also put effort into fulfilling their social responsibilities. Furthermore, by protecting the environment and engaging in philanthropic actions, businesses could also create positive impacts on society and a public image for a sustainable future development.
