Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 5+: The use of e-books is increasing day by day. Some people see this as a good step forward while others do not. Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There are individuals who believe that usage of electronic books is a good step forward, however, others disagree with them. This essay will first demonstrate that convenience of e-books and advantages for nature bring added benefits, followed by analysis of how the primary disadvantage, namely high impact on people’s eyes, is not valid.

The main advantage of e-books is an opportunity to bring them everywhere in a little purse. To put it another way, it is more convenient to take a small gadget than a big heavy book. Moreover, e-books are significantly more environmentally friendly than paper ones, since thousands of books can be downloaded to only one gadget. If people had bought less paper books, more forests have been saved. For example, scientists, who work in a paper production industry, confirm that production of one hundred paper pages takes around three trees.

The main disadvantage of electronic books is the stress for eyes that comes from reading from bright display. This is because at the beginning of e-books production the screen was not appropriate for long readings. However, modern technologies made it possible to produce screens that are very close to paper books. To illustrate, the public research was conducted at the bookshop in one of the New-York’s biggest malls. The audience that prefer e-books was asked about the amount of time they spend reading them, and if they can complain about any eye pain they get. 70% of people said that they read more than three hours a day and do not notice any uncomfortable feelings.

To conclude, although there are some drawbacks of e-books, namely, possible inconvenience for eyes, they are overweighed by benefits, such as lighter weight and saved trees.
