Band 6+: The use of social media, e.g. Facebook and Twitter, is replacing face-to-face contact for many people in everyday life. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

The emergence of diverse online platforms in recent years has significantly transformed interpersonal interactions. Although this matter is detrimental in some ways, I believe that the benefits gained from using online social media are more significant for the user, as it introduce a shift from traditional face-to-face communication to virtual engagement

One of the most important advantages of connecting through online platforms such as Twitter and Facebook, is their ability to transcend geographical boundaries, thereby fostering global connectivity. In other words, these real-time platforms allow people to maintain relationships, irrespective of physical distances. Some key features, such as instant messaging, video conferencing, and remote work capabilities, are provided by these social platforms, ensuring uninterrupted communication, allowing individuals to convey emotions and facial expressions effectively.. In addition, platforms like Teams and Google Meet enable seamless group communication. As a result, they enhance both personal and professional interactions.

On the other hand, some people argue that if people rely solely on connecting through social media, they may miss out on depth and emotional resonance compared to face-to-face conversations. While this concern is valid , advancement in social media platforms develop and release updated versions have introduced numerous stickers, emojis or even 3D avatars, helping bridge the emotional gap. For instance, Facebook has released 3D avatars where users can create personalized digital characters, which stimulate real human emotions. Moreover, the evolution of hardware on mobile phones has significantly improved the quality of online meetings. Thus, it ensures users have meaningful, emotional rich conversations, even in a virtual meeting.

In conclusion, although using social media instead of face-to-face meeting has limited emotional connection in a few aspects, I firmly believe that the benefits are more significant, making a positive development in connecting online. Not only does it make conversation more accessible and convenient but it promotes the development of global telecommunication.
