Advantage And Disadvantage

Band 9: The use of social media, e.g. Facebook and Twitter, is replacing face-to-face contact for many people in everyday life. Do the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the advent of social media platforms, such as Facebook and Twitter, has significantly revolutionized communication, replacing face-to-face contacts in people’s daily lives. From my perspective, the benefits of this trend undoubtedly outweigh its drawbacks.

First and foremost, virtual communication dismantles geographical boundaries, allowing people to connect with one another without the burden of relocation or travel. In doing so, people are encouraged to contact with their peers, friends, and family members on a regular basis, thus cultivating social bonds. For instance, Asian students in the US are now able to contact with their immediate family daily thanks to online resources like Instagram or Zalo, ultimately reinforcing family ties.

Moreover, this phenomenon can improve communication skills. Many people are hesitant when meeting others face-to-face due to their lack of confidence in directly convey their thoughts. Thanks to online platforms, they are now more eager to express their ideas and emotions effectively as a result of consistent practice. As such, their sociability can be significantly enhanced, thereby laying a solid foundation for their future professional development. For example, the engagement in online conversations via Google Meet or Zoom enables people to be more confident when communicating, as they are exposed to a wider range of situations in a low-pressure environment.

Admittedly, there is a common rebuttal that the overemphasis on social media for communication can diminish social interactions. Critics claim that the frequent use of online resources often hinders nuanced interactions that foster long-term connections, negatively affecting social bonds. This argument, however, is fundamentally flawed. Many people nowadays lack communication skills, and the use of online platforms prevents them from being marginalized and disconnected from others. This, in turn, strengthens social cohesion, promoting more equitable societies that favour deep connections among people from distant locations.

In conclusion, the ability of virtual communication to eliminate geographical barriers can cultivate communication skills demonstrates that its advantages far outweigh its shortcomings. Therefore, it is imperative that this means of communication be prioritized due to its potential to reinforce social bonds.
