Crime has been on a rise recently across the globe and the authorities are in search of different measures to reduce it immediately. Some people believe that making prison sentences longer is the best alternative as it could create panic among criminals, whereas others opine that there are plenty of other methods to decrease crime such as investment in the educational and law-enforcement sectors. This essay will discuss both the viewpoints and my own personal opinion.
On the one hand, implementing changes in the judiciary system to extend prison sentences could be a potential solution to create panic among violators. In other words, due to easy punishments for certain crimes such as robberies, individuals do not hesitate to perform criminal activities. To cite an example , the punishment for drugs consumption in countries such as India and China is only 2 years as compared to nations like USA and Britain which is 14 years. As a result, the incidence of criminal activities is quite low in these countries as compared to other parts of the world. Therefore, making criminal sentences more rigid could help in reducing crime significantly.
On the other hand , educational and law-enforcement sectors could contribute a lot to combat crime. Organizing seminars to highlight the consequences of violating the law could help individuals to change their mindset. In addition, investments such as hiring more police officers and advancement of technology to track criminals early-on could also prove to be an effective solution. For example, Russia has established a new facial- gestures recognition system to track body language of criminals.
To summarize, extension of prison sentences is an effective method to reduce crime but I believe that ways such as educating population and enhancing the quality of the law department could prove to be more effective in combating crime.
