A number of people are choosing to have a small family instead of a large one. Although in a small family children can get more individual attention or parents increase their savings, there are some drawbacks such as fewer playmates and loneliness.
It is a frequent topic of discussion that having a small family increases literacy of children in society because of parents individual attention. Children who are born in a small family usually grow with surrounded attention, which gives more chance to have higher literacy levels (especially in poor countries) and well educated. Parents allow them to do a lot so they can choose where to study, what to eat or even what to wear on holiday parties. In addition, parents save more for retirement, vacation or other investments while spending money less than those who have a large family and it gives a chance to lay money for vacations or something else. Today’s educational systems in many countries require spending a lot of money even, kindergartens are not free and this affects family’s budget. Small families have big chance to relax on vacations and travel around the world for their saved money.
On the other hand, there are several negatives like few playmates and loneliness. Children who are growing in small families often face lack of playmates so parents have to play with them. As a result, it takes a lot of time of parents and it prevents to stay at work or develop their career. Children often need to play with somebody and interact but parents can solve this problem by hiring babysitters. Nonetheless, children can feel isolated and this will affect their communication negatively. For example, children growing in large families are more communicative rather than children who have small families. In addition, children in small families may experience feelings of loneliness, particularly if they do not have close friends or relatives nearby. While they are playing different types of games, parents or even babysitter cannot replace another child and they are not be able to overcome the feeling of loneliness.
In conclusion, despite the getting more attention by parents and saving money on children’s daily costs, there are numerous issues such as loneliness and lack of playmates which will cause irreparable consequences.
