Band 6+: These days many people throw away damaged items rather than repairing them. Why has this change occurred? What are the effects of this change in attitude?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

In the contemporary world, most of the people choose to discard their impaired items instead of fixing them like before they did. This essay looks at some of the reasons behind this change, and also upcoming effects of this switch on society.

There are several reasons why people’s attitude towards damaged items has altered. The primary reason is accessibility. By this I mean, thanks to mass production, different items with various sizes, colors and quality are available in the markets, which makes it easier for people to purchase new ones instead of repairing them by improving their accessibility. Another reason is that, most of the time, fixing broken items costs a lot of money, time and other resources. As a consequence, people simply prefer to purchase new one in order to save money and avoid waste. To be more precise, people choose to throw away their defective belongings and get new ones as mass production makes products accessible and affordable. For instance, recent findings support the view that buying brand new electronic devices is economically more efficient than restoring malfunctioning gadgets.

This new trend has several consequences and the most important one is pollution. As goods become useless, they are seen as a garbage and thrown away, which in turn, causes serious pollution by damaging ecosystem. In addition to this, as many items thrown away, more space needs to be used to dispose of waste, resulting in loss of habitats. To illustrate, research conducted by environmentalists indicates that the harm caused by humans to the environment as well as biodiversity is growing due to the popularity of the new tendency. Last but not least, the disposal of goods after minimal use encourages consumerism which leads to throwaway culture. In the consumer society people wants to follow the latest trend, therefore they do not bother to rebuild their old goods. This kind of behavior not only depletes natural resources but also harms individual’s health in the long run.

In conclusion, more individuals tend to get rid of faulty goods rather than restoring them as products become more accessible and affordable due to mass production. However, this movement can have negative effects such as harming natural life and promoting consumerism through excessive purchasing obsession.
