While these tools can raise certain concerns about their adverse impact on creativity and autonomy, I contend that such tools can be conducive to users’ learning and working reasons if exploited properly.
Understandably, some individuals may cite their worries about the over-reliance on these AI-powered tools leading to a decrease in students and adolescents’ creative and autonomous abilities. Firstly, when students capitalize on artificial intelligence for their academic pursuit, their creativity may be significantly diminished. For example, in the course of handling more complex mathematics homework, in lieu of using their critical and logical thinking skills to address these problems, students take advantage of ChatGPT for detailed answers and guidance, thereby missing the opportunity to practice creative problem-solving. In addition,
autonomy can also be compromised. Teenagers who use AI to complete assignments or solve problems may struggle to build confidence in their abilities. For instance, they might feel less capable of completing tasks without AI assistance, creating a cycle of dependence. This reliance could be detrimental to their personal growth and success in a world that values self-reliance.
Notwithstanding certain drawbacks stemming from AI-powered tools, I strongly maintain that these tools can enhance creativity and autonomy when used wisely. As for students, tools like grammar checkers, writing checkers, or ChatGPT box can be indeed advantageous to their learning process, allowing students to focus more on higher-level thinking and creative aspects of their work. A case in point of this can be seen in those learning to write essay in English, the ChatGPT tool can greatly enhance their writing skill by offering numerous supports ranging from providing synonyms, generating ideas to checking mistakes and upgrading the more advanced version from the original one. This assistance could increase their efficacy and creativity while writing essays. In addition, autonomy cannot be negatively affected if adolescents are taught how to use AI responsibly. Teenage children only avail themselves of these tools for professional development only if these problems go beyond their abilities. For instance, teenage vloggers can make full use of content creators to produce more meaningful, awe-inspiring, and impactful videos, contributing significantly to their effectiveness in their products.
In conclusion, while there is a risk that over-reliance on AI tools might diminish creativity and autonomy, this outcome is not inevitable. The key lies in how these tools are used.
