To be very precise, I agree with this statement to a great extent. Although the positives of social media have always been widely laid out in front of people, there are numerous drawbacks as well .A good deal of my negative perception about social media is backed with facts.
Today, the majority of social media users are youngsters which implies people between the ages 13-35. The lower half of this age range tend to have a relatively naive and innocent thought process, which can easily be influenced greatly by what is shown to them. It is an age that is quintessential for gathering knowledge, building ideologies, nurturing good values and in overall shaping of the way people will think for the rest of their lives. At an age where hormones are raging the most, uncensored gender-discriminatory and violent posts can often lead to male youngsters getting hold of the ideas of pseudo-masculinity and toxicity. Inculcation of such stereotypes can scar their character-building for life.
We have seen over the years that social media has replaced newspapers to a great extent, when it comes to peddling news. This paves way for fake and biased news to be more easily accessible and hence, poses are serious social threat. For a considerably less harmful of an example, long hours of being busy with social media can seriously alter the academic growth of students. Apart from this, it poses a good deal of danger to the eyesight of people.
Obsession with social media can lead to potentially incurable psychological disorders among people, who find refuge in them instead of interacting with other human beings. Hence, as a responsible society, it is demanded of us to not give in to obsession with social media and to minimize to extents permissible. The influence social media has on us, must be kept under a close watch.
