Band 9: Tobacco is a kind of drug. People have been free to use it. Some people think it should be illegal to use it comparing with other drugs. To what extent do you agree or disagree? What is your opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

The use of tobacco has long been a contentious issue, as it is readily accessible to adults across various settings. Many argue that governments should impose restrictions similar to those on other illicit drugs, given the detrimental health effects associated with tobacco consumption. This essay will explore the rationale behind such a position and present my perspective on the matter.

To begin with, tobacco companies frequently engage in marketing strategies designed to promote their products, often prioritizing profit over public health. This has led to an environment where tobacco is widely accepted, despite the inherent risks. For instance, recent studies indicate that these companies have introduced new tobacco products aimed specifically at adults, leveraging the notion of freedom of choice while neglecting the adverse health implications. It can be argued that such practices constitute a form of exploitation, as individuals unwittingly become subjects of commercial experiments that undermine their well-being.

Moreover, the composition of tobacco products raises significant health concerns. They contain numerous harmful substances, including nicotine, which is highly addictive and detrimental to brain health. Chronic use can result in severe neurological damage, while other components, such as tar, contribute to cardiovascular diseases. For example, numerous studies have demonstrated a strong correlation between regular tobacco use and an increased risk of heart attacks and atherosclerosis. These health outcomes highlight the urgent need for stricter regulations on tobacco to safeguard public health.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the unrestricted use of tobacco poses grave risks to individuals and society at large. Given the addictive nature of tobacco and the unethical practices employed by the tobacco industry, it is imperative for governments to implement stringent measures akin to those imposed on other controlled substances. Such actions would not only protect public health but also mitigate the exploitation inherent in the tobacco market.
