Band 8+: Topic: In some countries, young people have become richer, healthier and live longer, but they are less happy. Question: What are the causes? What can be done to address this situation?

It is true that, particularly in developed countries, the youth of today enjoy longer lives and better health, but are not necessarily happier, despite all the material possessions that they have. In my opinion, the main reason why it happens is social media pressure and weak emotional connection, which can be addressed by promoting mental well-being and a healthy lifestyle.

One of the main reasons is the increasing pressure to succeed. Nowadays, society places high expectations on the younger generation to achieve success, build a successful career and maintain a perfect image. As a result, many young people constantly compare themselves to others, especially on social media, which leads to stress, anxiety and fear of failure. Although they are financially stable, this constant pressure negatively affects their mental well-being.

Another contributing factor is the lack of emotional connection and sense of purpose. Modern technology has made life more convenient, but it has also reduced face-to-face communication. Many young people spend a significant amount of time online instead of building genuine relationships. Consequently, they may feel lonely and emotionally isolated, even if they live in safe and comfortable environments.

There are several measures that can be taken to address this issue. Firstly, governments and education institutions should invest more in mental health support. Providing access to school counsellors and promoting awareness of mental health problems can help young people cope with stress more effectively. Secondly, schools and families should encourage a healthier balance between work and personal life. Activities such as sports, hobbies and volunteering can help the young generation find personal fulfilment and develop a sense of purpose beyond material success.

In conclusion, although young people in some countries are richer, safer and healthier, they are often less happy due to pressure and emotional isolation. By improving mental health support and promoting a balanced lifestyle, this problem can be reduced.
