In the present age, fast food has become a controversial topic. While some people believe that authorities should tax unhealthy food, others argue that they shouldn’t limit personal choice. In my view, governments must tax unhealthy products because this causes manifold health issues.
On the one hand, those who agree that governments should tax processed foods and I side with this view. The main reason is that, if governments increase the tax on processed food, individuals may not consume unhealthy products because of the price. Moreover, these days many residents suffer from obesity which causes from eating more fast foods. For example, if governments increased tax on unhealthy food factories the price will be very high for individuals to buy. As a result they prevent a wide range of health issues such as obesity and cancer by taxing.
On the other hand, supporters of the second view claim that if governments limit people’s freedom of choice it would be unfair. This is because individuals are responsible for their own eating habits. In addition, these days many residents consume a wide range of unhealthy products that can lead to addiction to fast food. For instance, now citizens rely heavily on fast foods for convenience and affordability. However, overconsuming fast food may lead to a sedentary lifestyle. Therefore, to maintain a balanced diet governments should tax processed foods.
To sum up, although both sides make valid arguments, I personally believe that authorities must increase tax on processed foods that are the main factors of health problems.
