Remote learning offered by universities and colleges is becoming more popular than traditional learning in a classroom. From my perspective, it provides many advanced features, and I do think its positive effects outweigh its drawbacks.
As a first point, online learning is more flexible than learning in a classroom. Many people need to go to work during the day; it is not convenient for them to learn in the classrooms, such as when work hours are 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. And online learning can help them avoid this conflict of schedules, and this benefit is a vital factor for many online learners. Moreover, online learning nowadays is accessible. People can participate in their courses just by using computers or smartphones without going to the physical classrooms. This way, they save time on travel, which is more efficient for those who have work to do than learning in a classroom. In addition, most online courses are customized, students can choose the teacher they prefer, and the process of their studies can adjust to their personal pace. By contrast, it is more stressful for a student who needs to catch up with others’ learning pace in classrooms. Therefore, it has a better learning vibe with online education.
However, online learning required self-discipline. It is not like traditional classroom learning, which requires a teacher to discipline students’ behaviors and ask them to focus on their studies. Also, there are many distractions on the Internet and smartphones that could easily distract students from learning.
To conclude, although self-discipline is important for online education, the flexibility of time schedules, learning equipment, and customized learning styles has outweighed its negligible drawbacks. Thus, I believe its advantages outweigh its disadvantages.
