All universities should mandate some hours of community service, such as offering help in a cleaning department, in a kitchen, or by spreading awareness of some social issues. While there are many benefits to this situation, as they become more responsible and might find the motive of their life by providing community services, there are some disadvantages as well, such as a lack of focus in their studies and a waste of time.
On the one hand, by providing help to the community, students can become more responsible in society. They get a chance to connect with various people whose experiences can help students learn from their lives. As a result, students can overachieve their goals in universities by applying the lessons they have learned. Moreover, they also get a chance to find the motive of their life when they work closely with all their co-workers at the community centers. For example, many people have joined NGOs as part-time after working with community centers while studying in colleges and universities.
On the other hand, there are many drawbacks to working for community service as students cannot focus on their university courses. Sometimes, it is just a waste of time because students cannot get the worth out of it. College degrees are not easy to pass even though students pay their full attention. So, when they spend their time working for a community, it gets extremely hard to even pass their courses at universities. For instance, students who only focus on their studies in universities would have a higher chance of getting a highly paid job after completing their education.
In conclusion, although there are numerous pros of community service for all students, I believe the cons are higher. They should focus on their studies rather than doing charity work for the community, which can also be done later in their life.
