Social media is a complex phenomenon that can be both advantageous and detrimental. In my opinion, when utilized appropriately, social media serves as a crucial tool for communication. However, its misuse and the lack of understanding about its proper usage have tainted its reputation.
The potential benefits of social media, when responsibly utilized, undoubtedly outweigh its drawbacks. Its unparalleled ability to connect people globally exemplifies its significance. Without social media, individuals would struggle to access current news and remain connected to the world. Conversely, excessive use of this technology can lead to addiction. For instance, I personally use social media to stay informed and maintain contact with my social circle, which proves to be invaluable in today’s fast-paced world. Yet, mindlessly scrolling through platforms such as Instagram without breaks can cause significant psychological distress.
Social media has significantly impacted modern society. The spread of misinformation and propaganda on various platforms poses a substantial threat. There are numerous reports of data and information manipulation by individuals with nefarious intentions to sway public opinion. With the rapid advancement of Artificial Intelligence, the proliferation of deepfake videos has become a major concern, particularly for individuals in positions of authority. This issue is likely to pose a significant challenge for politicians worldwide, especially with the approaching 2024 elections, during which nearly half of the global population is expected to cast their votes.
The functional use of social media has greatly simplified people’s lives, but its misuse has become increasingly prevalent. Many governments have taken steps to regulate and even prohibit certain social media platforms, such as TikTok, which is widely popular globally, due to their facilitation of the dissemination of fake news and influencing narratives. I personally view such measures as violations of human rights and condemn these draconian actions. In conclusion, I advocate for solutions that focus on increasing public awareness about the responsible usage of social media, thus mitigating the need for authoritarian oversight.
