Band 6+: What is it in the mass media that has negative effects on teenagers and what measures should governments take to solve this problem?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

20th century has witnessed the skyrocketing prevalence of mass media with the advent of online newspaper and popular Internet platforms. Alongside with the benefits, the negative effects on teenagers cannot be overlooked. In this essay, I will discuss some remarkable downsides and propose sensible approaches.

First, media in modern times are fraught with violent contents and gruesome reports. To clarify, TV programs continually broadcast gory sights and ill-mannered, sometimes rude and brutal criminals. Gradually, these scenes immerse into their minds, mislead their perspectives on the real world. Furthermore, long-term exposure presumably results in teenagers taking them for granted and adopting these brutal practices. Thus, not only does it not bridge the gap between peers but also pushes them into quarrels and fights.

Second, due to the vulnerable and impressionable nature of youngsters, advertising campaigns take advantage of this and lure them into the enticing products. With flashy slogans, tricks and overhyped description, sellers exaggerate the wonderful effects and conceal the unwanted ingredients under the cover of scientific names. Therefore, youngsters are pushed into the whirlwind of constant shopping and purchasing on an impulse. To tackle this issue, sensible and prompt approaches should be adopted.

To begin with, censorship code and explicit content blocker must be implemented, this includes blurring adult-only videos or brutal-looking images and blocking visits to dark sites. Second, educational programs should be conducted to disseminate the nature of violent scenes on TV and appealing of advertised products. This also fosters good codes of conduct and perfect youngsters soft skills.

In conclusion, the downsides of media are manifold, namely the source of gruesome content and advertisements. And steps can be taken are comprised of strictly controlled censorship and programs. I believe these measures will ensure youngsters’ well-rounded growth and maturity.
