Band 8+: When a country develops its technology, the traditional skills and ways of life die out. It is pointless to try and keep them alive. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Technological advancements have undoubtedly reshaped societies, often leading to the gradual decline of traditional skills and practices. While some argue that preserving these customs is futile, I strongly disagree. Traditional skills are not only integral to cultural identity but also hold practical value in contemporary society. These time-honored practices are vital to maintaining the cultural heritage of a nation, connecting people to their history and identity. Crafts such as pottery, weaving, and calligraphy, for instance, are not merely outdated methods but art forms that reflect the values and aesthetics of a civilization. If such skills are abandoned entirely, future generations risk losing a crucial part of their heritage. Many countries, recognizing this, have integrated traditional arts into education and tourism, ensuring they remain relevant despite technological advancements. Japan, for example, has successfully preserved its tea ceremonies and kimono-making industries by blending tradition with modern business models.

Beyond cultural value, many traditional skills continue to offer practical advantages over modern alternatives. Traditional farming techniques, for instance, often emphasize sustainability and ecological balance, whereas industrialized agriculture can lead to soil depletion and environmental degradation. Similarly, herbal medicine, developed over centuries, remains a viable healthcare option in many parts of the world, sometimes complementing modern medical treatments. By maintaining a balance between tradition and technology, societies can make more informed choices rather than completely discarding time-tested practices.

Contrary to the belief that technology inevitably erases traditional ways of life, there are numerous instances where the two coexist harmoniously. Advancements in artificial intelligence and digital platforms have made it easier than ever to document and teach traditional skills online. Platforms such as YouTube and digital museums allow artisans to showcase their expertise, ensuring that even niche crafts find a global audience. Moreover, many modern industries, including fashion and architecture, continue to draw inspiration from traditional craftsmanship, proving that technological progress does not necessitate cultural erasure.

In conclusion, while technology undeniably alters the way societies function, dismissing traditional skills as obsolete is both impractical and culturally damaging. By recognizing the value of these skills and integrating them with modern advancements, societies can preserve their heritage while benefiting from innovation. Rather than allowing traditions to fade into obscurity, they should be adapted and celebrated in contemporary contexts.
