Band 7+: With the development of technology children are now living in a world that is completely different to what it was 50 years ago. What problems this cause for society and the family?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Technology has adversely impacted many aspects of life in a short span of time since its launch. This implies the world individuals are living in is totally different from what it used to be. This has absolutely changed the way children perceive and assess the world within themselves, the way society functions and the family dynamics overall. This causes problems for society and the family as its member as screen addiction, followed by impact on social skills, necessary for future members of society and social isolation.

The rise of smartphones, tablets, and computers has transformed the way children engage with the world, with potential consequences that extend beyond the confines of the digital realm. Children, with their developing minds, can find the virtual world captivating and sometimes more enticing than the physical one. The abundance of video games, social media, and online content can lead to a form of escapism where children retreat into the digital space, potentially neglecting real-world interactions. This reduces the amount of face-to-face interactions, which leads to lack of non-verbal intelligence. It is vital to be emotionally intelligent and understand non-verbal cues, build empathy and develop effective communication skills to be able to build long-term relationships.

While technology can provide opportunities for socialization and connection, it can also lead to social isolation and cyberbullying. Children who spent more time on screens are more likely to experience social and emotional difficulties such as anxiety and depression. Prolonged entertainment with screens, however, limits these experiences, potentially hindering a child’s ability to navigate social situations confidently. Lack of daily social interactions make children unsocial, which negatively affects children’s wellbeing, family dynamics and society as a whole in the end. Looking at bigger picture these seemingly small and insignificant individual addiction problems can get bigger over time and accumulate to the extent, when children, raised in virtual world will be unable to develop, contribute and make their input to the real world.

To sum up everything that has been pointed out in this essay, I assume screen addiction and social isolation, caused by development of technology harshly impact children, society and the family in a negatively.
