On a global scale, demand in oil and gas is dramatically increasing, so most people believe that unexplored regions should be opened for resource extraction. I completely disagree with this argument because of serious environmental risks.
On the one hand, it is exploitation of discovered regions that causes irreversible environmental damage.
Oil and gas exploration can lead to pollution, destroying wildlife, increasing carbon footprint, which contribute to climate change. Moreover, many of these places are natural habitats and opening them up for exploration may harm local flora and fauna. These issues are undeniably crucial, as the damage to wildlife and natural landscapes may never be fully repaired. It can also slow down implementing renewable energy system, such as wind and solar power. They are more eco-friendly and affordable nowadays, therefore investing in clean energy is better way to meet the world’s energy needs without damaging the planet.
On the other hand, supporters of this view claim that gas and oil is important and irreplaceable for countries. Exploring new areas could increase energy supply, reduce dependence on imports and enhance job opportunities for people. These resources are widely used for transportation, electricity and industrial activities. Therefore, these sources are necessity for developing countries in terms of economic conditions.
In conclusion, not only have benefits opening up untouched areas for world, but also have significant drawbacks, including environmental issues such as, climate change, destoying naturak habitat. I strongly believe that investing renewable energy is more beneficial rather than upen up undiscovered areas for oil and gas exploration nowadays.
