Working from home is a recent trend and continues to increase with each passing day. while some folks are of the view that this paradigm shift will result in migration to rural areas while others believe urban areas will ajust to the recent developments and conserve culture and creativity. Both views are relatively accurate for a number of reasons, I believe this trend will lead to less innovation and communual living.
Working remotely offers people convinience. Being able to complete a task in the comfort of ones home makes the job seemless as all attention will be focused on the assignment because the issue of transportation to an office or assessibility issues are eliminated. For instance, Richard Raven a researcher reported in 2021 after the Covid-19 pandemic that remote work not only improved productivity of workers but also enabled them to carry out tasks with little or no supervision, consequently improving accountability and innovation in the cities.
In contrast, Performing work related activities outside the office have resulted in relocation to less developed regions and towns and a decline in human physical interactions. Athough cities may be have the basic amenities required by an individual to live hitch-free, urbanization brings about a spike in noise and environmental pollution. All these problems will be cut down with remote work. A typical example is the increase in movement of people to smaller and more quiet towns in London as a result of remote jobs. This migration offers them a cheaper life as their cost of living declines and exposure to chemical emissions from industries in the big cities is reduced but these benefits come at the expense of our physical social contact.
Having looked at both opinions critically, remote work will lead to migration to rural areas resulting in a decline in traditional city centers. Additionally this trend will rob us of our communual lives an retard innovation because humans are designed to work efficiently in groups and in an enabling work environment.
In conclusion, while some people believe urban areas will adapt to remote work and maintain their satus as centers of innovation, this shift from the convensional office work will lead to brain drain as people will migrate to smaller cities and this will slow down development.
