Band 7+: With the rise of social media, individuals are increasingly curating their online personas, often presenting idealized versions of themselves. Some believe this trend allows people to express their desired identities and build online communities, while others worry about the potential for social comparison, mental health issues, and the erosion of authenticity. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

There is no denying the fact that social media has obvious effects on individuals as well as society. While it is a commonly held belief that there are significant concerns about the way it affects how we connect with others and our self-confidence, there is also an opposing argument. In my opinion, social media has negative effects on our authenticity and self-acceptance.

To begin with, authenticity is one of the most important human values; however, social media often distracts individuals from their true identity by promoting unrealistic standards and role models. People tend to present themselves as they wish to be seen rather than who they truly are. In addition, users frequently highlight their achievements in order to gain validation and approval from others. For example, many people today share almost every aspect of their lives online, often sacrificing privacy to attract attention and followers.

On the other hand, social media also has positive aspects. It enables individuals to express themselves more freely and to connect with others who share similar interests. Moreover, social media provides an opportunity to share knowledge and support communities. For instance, many educators use online platforms to share educational content, raise awareness, and help others learn from their experiences.

In conclusion, although opinions about social media differ, I believe that it can have harmful effects if people are not conscious of how it influences their behavior and self-image. Therefore, individuals should be aware of its impact and use social media responsibly in order to protect their sense of reality and personal well-being.
