People would exchange, within the narrow alleys of Bogalusa, after an exhaustive work at the Great Southern Lumber, their opinion in the lesser known version of Bonnie and Clyde. They had no name, no face : they were nobody. The couple would commit minor crimes for the sake of their lives. They began to steal small convenience stores, then, they became more and more ambitious: from: luxury stores, to exquisite and expensive jewelry… to banks. They’ve passed from little thieves, to known thieves. No one knew when the couple would stop and so, against all odds, the townspeople were sympathizing with them, even seeing them as heroes. The dancers, they called the couple, those two managed to bring more hope than anyone in that town.
They danced around the night, they stole more and more precious jewels, they sang across the dark streets. The locals became bewitched and deeply touched by them, the dancers defied the laws of the word, they made their own laws . They decided to survive, not to let misery take them down, they allowed life to give them a glimpse of happiness despite all. Those were the reasons for such admiration for the dancers, at least, the one that was commonly shared with the townspeople : “At least, even the misery, they never shed a tear. They were always smiling and dancing… they had one another. Like us, they fought to survive, it may not have been the right way to do so, but who am I to judge?. They are a strength to be reckoned with”
However, the amount of trouble that the dancers were causing, became a major issue to the police, an issue that needed to be eliminated and terminated from this word. Their behavior enlightened a fire within the people who lived at Bogalusa, more and more convenience stores were stolen, more and more confrontations saw day with the townspeople and the police. If life was the one that forged misery for those two souls, shall death bring them peace. If their love gave them a reason to live, shall love be the reason behind their end. They were aware of it all, the danger, the risks of a life like theirs…
They were planning their last ballad, their last dance. They were aware of what the police were planning : arresting them and after waiting for the evident sentence, death by electric chair. They’ve put fancy attires on, invaded a ballroom, a majestuous empty ballroom, they’ve settled an old radio with their favorite song on.
A few candles burned around them, they took one another’s hands and began to dance. They began to swirl around, they did all in such grace that any being around them, would be blessed to watch them dance. Like a rose, she twirled around, like a knight he watched over every step and assured his lover safety. The melody, intoxicating, had of course taken the attention of those around, they had called the authorities. However the couple never cared about that, all that they wanted was to dance around and enjoy the delightful song, and they did until their last breath. What was unbeknownst to the authorities was precisely the state of the thieves, they expected them alive not dead.
When they arrived at the scene, they found the couple oddly quiet. The man was holding his lover within his arms sitting on the ground. Beside him, a poison bottle, they chose to have control upon their end, rather than dying on an electric chair. Thus, the dancers only had two things in their lives : love and the choice to end it all. Only those two things were truly given to them
