Band 7+: Write about the following topic: People nowadays prefer to interact online (e.g. do shopping, chat with friends) rather than talking to other people face-to-face. What are the reasons for this? Is this a positive or negative development? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience. You should spend about 40 minutes on this task.

The rapid and drastic development of technology has changed our lives, including the shift towards online communication rather than conventional conversation. From my perspective, I believe it wouldn’t yield positive outcomes for several reasons detailed below.

First and foremost, the undeniable convenience of online interaction, such as chatting with friends via social networking sites, has become one of the primary drivers of this shift. With significant support from portable devices like smartphones, tablets, and laptops, people can effortlessly engage in every aspect of a conversation online at remarkable speed, while direct communication would require a considerable amount of time and effort. Additionally, online communication helps shorten the physical distance between individuals and saves time. A face-to-face meeting requires a specific place and date, but an online chat needs nothing more than just a good Internet connection and a device. Therefore, it’s not surprising that the number of people who have opted to replace face-to-face conversation with online interaction has increased rapidly.

As a result, this trend could lead to a serious decline in the way we communicate. The primary disadvantage is that as people overuse online communication, they become increasingly dependent on it. Consequently, they may forget how to engage in normal and conventional conversation, which can contribute to social disorders. These cases are not uncommon in modern society, where individuals often choose to isolate themselves in their own private spaces and avoid building real relationships.

In summary, I don’t believe that online interaction should completely replace conventional methods. Maintaining real-life conversations and relationships should be balanced with online communication in our modern lives.
