It has been argued that the declining state of Earth’s environment will make the planet uninhabitable, forcing humanity to relocate to another planet. This essay will examine both arguments both in favor of this opinion, such as the unfavorable projections of scientific models, as well as against it, including the possibility of attempting more viable alternatives first. These arguments will lead to the conclusion that, while this option may prove to be a necessary last option, efforts to prevent environmental deterioration should be a priority.
On the one hand, scientific observations paint a grim picture for the future state of the environment. Climate change, pollution, deforestation and human enroachment on animal habitats are detrimental to the health of ecosystems around the globe and to the habitability of the planet. For example, global warming disrupts weather patterns, leading to unpredictable natural phenomena, with increasing intensity and frequency. It also disrupts migratory patterns, destabilising food chains that humans require for survival. These issues imply that remaining on Earth may eventually prove infeasible.
On the other hand, while current projections naturally lead to a pessimistic outlook, it is vital to focus all possible efforts on reversing the effects of human activity on the planet instead of abandoning it. Alternatives to relocating to a new world include strengthening of regulations related to environmental protection and preservation efforts, as well as promotion of scientific research into causes and solutions for problems as they arise. For instance, switching to cleaner energy sources is a viable first step. Such a move would alleviate climate change and potentially reverse some of the damage it has caused, including to migration and food chains.
In conclusion, while the current environmental situation is suboptimal and projected to worsen, leaving Earth should not be the first solution we attempt. Instead, it should be kept as a last resort, after all other courses of action are exhausted.
