The graph illustrates an estimation of illiteracy rates in the world, by region and by gender for the last year. In general, the majority of women in the Arab States and South Asia suffered from illiteracy. In the Arab State, the percentage of males illiteracy rate was about half of the females percentage of illiteracy rate. The highest illiteracy rate was in the South Asian region, where the illiteracy rate for female was about 55 percent while the rate for male 35 percent. The total illiteracy rate in that region was about 45 percent. However, Latin America/Caribbean only had about 10 percent illiteracy rate for male and female. Moreover, the percentage of females in Sub-Saharan Africa had a significantly higher illiteracy rate than the percentage of males. In East Asia/Oceania, female illiteracy was about the double of illiteracy of males. Overall, the illiteracy rate in the world by region illustrated in the graph were significantly higher in other regions than developed countries, where the illiteracy rate was about 3-4 percent for females and males. Generally speaking, each region had a higher illiteracy rate for females than males during last year.
