The bar chart represents the percentage of estimated illiteracy rates by region and gender for the last year. The chart presents that in every part of the world the burden of illiteracy is mostly bored by women. In addition to that, Caribbean and oceania shares the similar illiteracy pattern like developed countries, whereas in sub-saharan Africa, arab states and south asia large portion of the population is not literate.
Among the 7 regions in comparison, majority of the developed countries population knows how to read and write. and the highest in south-east asia. Furthermore, there is a significant difference between illiteracy rate gender wise.
Only 5% of the developed countries population is illiterate, with no significant difference between two gender. Second in average, Latin America follows the similar trend, with just a little over 10% illiteracy rate.
However, dramatic difference is noticeable in rest of the regions due to the higher illiteracy rates among women. In East asia, one in every five women is illiterate. In South east asia, half of its female population is illiterate making it the highest female illiteracy rate among all the regions. However, in all of these regions, male illiteracy rate is below 35%.
