Band 8+: Young people committing crimes should be treated the same as adults by the authorities. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Some people believe that young offenders should receive the same treatment as adults from legal authorities. I completely disagree with this view because young people are generally less mature than adults and may not fully understand the consequences of their actions.

One important reason why young offenders should be treated differently is that they have not yet developed the same level of maturity as adults. Their decisions can be strongly influenced by their friends, family and surrounding environment. In addition, young people may act impulsively without considering the long-term consequences of their behaviour. For example, a teenager who steals something because of pressure from friends may not have the same understanding of responsibility as an adult who deliberately commits the same offence.

Another reason is that the main purpose of dealing with young offenders should be to rehabilitate them rather than simply punish them. Young people still have considerable time to change their behaviour and become responsible members of society. Educational programmes, counselling and community service can help them understand the consequences of crime and develop better habits. In contrast, treating them exactly like adult criminals could make it more difficult for them to reintegrate into society.

In conclusion, I strongly disagree that young offenders should always be treated in the same way as adults. Their lower level of maturity and greater potential for rehabilitation should be taken into consideration when authorities decide how to respond to their crimes.

While authorities are seeking working methods to reduce the crime rate among youngsters, the same punishments as for adults are considered as one of the options.
