The bar chart illustrates literacy rates between men and women in seven regions in 2011. Overall, the percentage of men and women is relatively equal in Central Asia and Central/Eastern Europe. However, it is clear that there is a significant difference in the literacy rates between males and females in the remaining areas.

In Central Asia and Central/Eastern Europe, the data are highest in seven regions. Nearly 100% of citizens are literate in two of those regions. The percentages decrease by about 5% to 15% in East Asia/Pacific, Latin America/Caribbean, Arab states, and South and West Asia. The lowest result is Sub-Saharan Africa, with literacy rates of around 70% for men and 60% for women. This is lower than the peaks of around 30% for men and 40% for women.
