Band 7+: Some think that teenagers should follow older people’s rules. Others think that it is natural for them to challenge what older people say. Discuss both views and give your opinion.

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

It’s natural for teenagers to challenge the rules and opinions of older generations. While some believe that teenagers should simply follow the advice of their elders, others argue that it’s essential for young people to assert their independence and make their own decisions. This essay will explore both sides of this argument and present my own perspective.

Those who advocate for teenagers following older people’s rules often cite the value of experience and wisdom. Older generations have lived longer and have learned from their mistakes, making them valuable sources of guidance. They may feel that teenagers lack the maturity and judgment to make wise choices on their own. For example, parents might try to restrict their children’s social activities or academic choices, believing these choices are in the child’s best interest. However, these well-intentioned attempts to protect teenagers can sometimes backfire, leading to resentment and rebellion.

On the other hand, teenagers are often driven by a desire to forge their own path and assert their independence. They crave autonomy and the freedom to explore their own ideas and values. This desire is a natural part of growing up, and suppressing it can be detrimental to their development. For instance, a teenager might feel stifled if their parents forbid them from pursuing a particular career path or hobby. In such cases, it’s crucial for parents and other adults to create an environment that fosters open communication and respect for the teenager’s evolving worldview.

In my opinion, striking a balance between respect for older generations and the right to self-determination is essential. While teenagers should listen to and learn from the advice of their elders, they should also be encouraged to think critically and develop their own principles. The most effective approach involves open dialogue and mutual understanding. Adults should provide guidance and support without imposing their will on young people. Ultimately, allowing teenagers to make their own mistakes and learn from them is vital for their growth and development.
