A statement argued for centuries is that the family is society’s bedrock. Although some people agree that family is a vital component of linking society, it is also suggested that society plays more roles. In my view, society is created by a range of parties other than family.
The first reason is that society provides different social values effectively through other institutions. The holistic system of society, such as the social welfare centre, is generally found to have diverse parties to provide services for different social needs; family is only one of those target services provided by the government. These initiations interact and balance each other to contribute to the function and progress of society. Furthermore, being significant in society is not only concerned with family; however, social needs, politics, and economic states are influencing and shaping one another. With these institutions and considerations, these elements are valued, despite family.
Also accountable for this view is that society has a social responsibility to its citizens. It is in fact commonplace to see many countries being approached by some measures to improve people’s quality of life. For example, the Hong Kong government has offered twelve years of free education for local citizens to improve their overall education level. There are, however, some people who argue that family is the most important component of society because children are the future pillars. Is society only concerned with children’s issues? Considering its social responsibility, society is at the center of ensuring the good development of its members. In light of this, society would be wise and delicate to distribute resources to different groups of people and institutions.
In conclusion, society has served many functions and roles for diverse groups and institutions. It cannot be denied that, though, family is one of the essential social issues because children are the future pillars. Yet, with social values and social responsibility, society is generated by these valued components other than family.
