Overall, PhD qualifications gained popularity over the period, while first degrees became less common. Meanwhile, the proportion of Master’s holders either remains unchanged or increased slightly. It is also worth noting that by 2010, the PhD in science had narrowly overtaken the Master’s in Science as the most held qualification.
In 1990, the majority of staff had qaulification in Master’s science, making up 29%. This was closely followed by Master’s in Art at 21%, and First degree in Science at 20%. While First degree in Art accounted for 15% of all employees, higher degrees were less common. By comparison, only 13% had a PhD in science, and a mere 2% held a PhD in Art.
By 2010, the proportion of staff with a PhD in Science had soared to 30%, making it the highest among all other qualifications. A much smaller rise was recorded in the figure for those with a PhD in Art, growing modestly to 5%. On other other hand, the percentage of employees holding a Master’s in Science remained stable, whereas that of those with a Master’s in Art rose slightly to 23%. In contrast, the share of employees with a First Degree in Science fell to 11%, and the First Degree in Art category dropped sharply to 2%, becoming the lowest overall.
