Band 8+: Although it is generally prohibited, corporal ( physical ) punishment still persists in many schools and families. Do you think corporal punishment is an acceptable way to regulate children's behavior?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

There has been a contentious debate over corporal punishment as a means of effective methods to instill discipline. Despite some ongoing debates, it is my firm belief that this approach is neither acceptable nor beneficial in regulating children’s behavior.

Granted, proponents of physical punishment frequently hold the view that it educates toddler obedience, respect, and hard work. This belief is rooted in the assumption that such disciplinary methods are effective, especially in situations where children may be perceived as misbehaving. Nevertheless, this reasoning is fundamentally flawed as adolescents who endure violent experiences are more likely to develop antisocial behavior. For instance, almost all teenagers who grow up in abusive environments may have difficulty managing conflicts with their peers, often resorting to physical aggression as a means of conflict resolution. Hence, the violent conduct they experienced in their formative years was mirrored in their behavior.

To further substantiate my position, I would strongly argue the aforementioned merit is overshadowed by a myriad of drawbacks. Primarily, actively resorting to this form of discipline could damage the relationship between children and adults, particularly concerning parent-child and teacher-student relationships, where understanding and dialogue are vital. This is because toddlers who are physically disciplined may avoid expressing their thoughts with parents, thereby creating an emotional barrier for misunderstandings and conflicts, which in turn weakens family bonds. Another key drawback is the everlasting emotional trauma caused by violent education. When teenagers are physically punished, they receive the message that they are undeserving of respect or love, leading to feelings of worthlessness and low self-esteem later in life. For instance, adults who experienced child abuse have difficulty to cultivating relationships, since they may either avoid conflict entirely or overreact, which carries the weight of unresolved emotional scars from their childhood.

In conclusion, it is irrefutable that corporal discipline is effective in some certain situations, but I opine that it is overwhelmingly to its negative impact. Therefore, alternative methods of discipline, such as positive reinforcement and communication should be improved to create a safe and supportive environment for children to learn to grow.

Even though corporal was prohibited, it persists in schools and families as a punishment. I do not think corporals should be allowed in regular schools or families. Firstly, physical punishment was expected to make children more afraid and obedient. Although it worked, it still had a bad effect on children. Children, who had to tolerate […]
