Band 9: As housing is a basic need for people, government should provide free housing for everyone who cannot afford it. To what extent do you agree or disagree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Housing is universally recognised as a basic human need, yet millions of people across the globe continue to live without stable accommodation. In this context, the question of whether governments should provide free housing to their citizens has generated considerable debate. I strongly agree that governments have a moral and social obligation to ensure access to housing, primarily because it safeguards human dignity and fosters long-term economic stability.

One of the most compelling arguments in favor of this view is that shelter is a fundamental right that underpins human dignity. In detail, without secure housing, individuals often face a cascade of difficulties including poor health, unemployment, and social exclusion. To illustrate, countries such as Finland have adopted the “Housing First” policy, where providing homes to the homeless dramatically reduced poverty levels and healthcare costs. This example highlights the fact that offering housing not only benefits individuals but also reduces public expenditure on social services. Therefore, governmental involvement in providing housing can create both humane and economically sound outcomes.

Additionally, another significant reason is that government-led housing initiatives stimulate urban renewal and economic growth. To be precise, converting unused or derelict land into affordable housing projects revitalises neglected areas and encourages community development. To cite an example, social housing schemes in Singapore have enabled low-income families to live in well-planned estates, which in turn boosted local economies and enhanced social cohesion. This case exemplifies how targeted government intervention in housing can serve as a catalyst for national progress. Consequently, housing provision should be viewed not merely as charity but as a strategic investment in a country’s future.

On the other hand, some critics contend that free housing is financially unsustainable, especially in nations already struggling with budget deficits. To elaborate, they argue that public resources would be overstretched, leading to higher taxes and potential dependency among citizens. However, even if this concern has merit, governments can implement partial schemes – such as shared housing units or means-tested subsidies – that balance fiscal responsibility with social justice. Therefore, one can say without a shadow of doubt that the benefits of state intervention far outweigh its drawbacks.

In conclusion, even though opponents highlight financial limitations, the arguments in favor of government-provided housing – namely protecting human dignity and driving economic development – are far more compelling. I firmly believe that every government should take responsibility for ensuring its citizens have a safe place to live. I hope in the near future, more nations will adopt innovative housing policies that eliminate homelessness and promote social equity.
