Band 6+: "Social media has a mostly negative impact on young people. To what extent do you agree or disagree?"

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

For social media, few considerations are as pivotal as the negative effects of social media on young people, which plays an indispensable role in shaping long-term outcomes. Across both developed and developing countries, considerable resources are allocated to the negative effects of social media on young people, as it inherently demands the integration of diverse elements such as social media addiction, low self-esteem, and cyberbullying. In this context, the negative effects of social media on young people have emerged as a fundamental driving force behind the advancement of social media, particularly in today’s rapidly evolving world. I strongly agree that social media has a negative effect on young people.

Naturally, I strongly support the view that social media negatively influences young people, primarily because of its significant impact on developing social media addiction, suffering from low self-esteem, and facing cyberbullying and online harassment. To elaborate further, social media can significantly encourage young people to compare themselves with others, create unrealistic expectations, and contribute to poor mental well-being. Moreover, as young people increasingly spend a considerable amount of time on various social media platforms, the negative effects of social media have become increasingly evident. This is mainly because it directly reduces face-to-face interaction, wastes valuable time, and affects the long-term well-being of young people. The experiences of many young people clearly illustrate the potential of social media to bring about meaningful negative consequences.

Furthermore, another compelling reason to support this view lies in the considerable negative influence of social media on exposure to harmful content, the spread of false information, and poor concentration. In other words, social media can expose young people to harmful content, while simultaneously spreading false information and encouraging unhealthy lifestyles. As young people continue to grow in today’s rapidly changing world, the negative impact of social media has become increasingly significant. This is mainly because it can damage academic performance, develop poor concentration, and create unfavourable outcomes for young people and society as a whole. Therefore, the growing recognition of these harmful effects clearly demonstrates why social media should be regarded as an important factor negatively affecting the lives and long-term development of young people.

Ultimately, it is the responsibility of society to critically evaluate the role of the negative effects of social media on young people and determine whether its overall impact on social media is more beneficial than detrimental. Consequently, I strongly agree that social media has a negative effect on young people.
