The table provides information on the percentage of income spent by adults and children on four categories—food, electronic equipment, music, and videos—in the UK during 1998.
Overall, adults spent the most on food, whereas children, especially girls, spent a significant portion of their income on music. Spending on videos and electronic equipment was generally lower for both adults and children.
Adults allocated 25% of their income to food, with women spending 39%, significantly more than men at just 14%. Children, on the other hand, spent less on food, with boys and girls allocating 9% and 11%, respectively. Spending on electronic equipment was much higher among children (23%) than adults, where men spent 10% and women just 1%.
When it came to music, children showed a strong preference, particularly girls, who spent 40%, followed closely by boys at 38%. In contrast, adults spent only 5% of their income on music. Videos were more popular among boys (18%) and girls (17%) than among adults, where spending was minimal, at 1% for adults overall and 0.5% for women.
