It is argued that nobody should work after the age of 65 because they worked enough and need to care about themselves. On the other hand, there a some people who disagree with this idea owing to a free decision by everybody. In my opinion, while there a good reasons of why people shouldn’t work after a certain age, elderly people should be able to decide by themselves if they want to work after the age of 65.
Firtstly, due to the physical condition of older people many jobs can’t be done to an unlimited age. In addition, you can argue that older people have earned their retirement and nobody shouldn’t have to work for money at a certain age. One clear example is the physical hard work of a craftperson who are often not able to go to work after the age of 65.
On the other hand, for many occupations you don’t need a very good physical condition. In those cases it would be patronising if the elderly aren’t be allowed to work in their professions. It should be a autonom decision of each person how long they want to work. For example, a well educated lawyer can easily work after the age of 65. Furthermore, work experience is a valuable resource and society as well as companies should be able to participate on this value. So, if people want to work after the age of 65, why should somebody stop them if it’s their personal decision.
In conclusion, while there are a good reasons why not every professional is able to work after the age of 65, nobody should be banned from working after reaching the age of 65. It is important that everybody has a free decision on how long and how much they want to work. Another question is, of course, whether they have to work.
