In many developed countries, employees are demanding a longer weekend compared to what the world currently has with two days as a weekend. However, I want to completely disagree with this idea, as this can affect the skills of the workers significantly, which leads to a slowdown in the world economy. This essay will discuss the different reasons not to increase the days of the rest period for employees.
Firstly, there are industries and enterprises where 24/7 work is needed, and for that, more highly skillful employees need to be available at any given point in time. For instance, the banking sector has to hire IT engineers in order to function their software infrastructure every second. Any faults occurring during the long weekend impact major revenue losses for these companies if no appropriate staff is present.
Secondly, reducing working hours during the week has a converse effect on workers’ working capabilities. Employees often become lazy, and they tend to forget their valuable skills, which leads to a domino effect on their children as they also are not able to develop their right abilities in other activities such as education and sport. For example, with more days on weekends, workers plan vacations and trips more regularly with their youngsters, which leads to negative development in their childhood.
In addition, two days on weekends are sufficient for anyone to get refreshed, and also, instead of increasing the days on weekends, employees can plan longer vacation trips during the year. Some countries, such as Germany, have a rule to give at least one month’s vacation period to every worker.
To sum up, with a longer weekend, industries and nations will lose their economic footing, so the current working system with two days as a weekend is nicely implemented.
