Band 7+: “Prevention is better than cure “. Researching and treating diseases is too costly so it would be better to invest in preventative measures. To what extent do you agree?

Note: Both the topic and the essay were created by one of our users.

Preventive measures are considered more advantageous than curative interventions. This implies that by taking proactive steps to maintain good health, the likelihood of falling victim to diseases can be markedly reduced. However, the central question remains: can all diseases be effectively averted through preventative measures? While it is true that certain common ailments such as flu, colds, and fevers can be mitigated through preventive actions, there remains a possibility of still contracting them. Fortunately, with proper healthcare and medication, recovery from such diseases can be swift. Nonetheless, in the case of diseases like cancer, preventing their onset is contingent upon lifestyle choices such as refraining from smoking or excessive alcohol consumption. Nevertheless, there are instances where individuals develop cancer without any history of such detrimental habits. This underscores the complex nature of diseases and the myriad factors that contribute to their manifestation, including genetic predisposition, environmental influences, and other yet-to-be-discovered reasons that can be colloquially referred to as “fate”.

Undoubtedly, medical research is a costly endeavor. While some may argue in favor of channeling resources into preventive measures rather than research, this argument does not hold water when applied to severe diseases such as cancer. In reality, many diseases are beyond the scope of effective prevention and can only be managed or cured, often necessitating lifelong treatment or posing fatal risks. Moreover, the emergence of novel diseases further underscores the critical importance of ongoing medical research in safeguarding human health and well-being.

The financing of medical research necessitates support from both government entities and private sources. Establishing a global network that facilitates the seamless exchange of data among medical researchers is imperative. This collaborative approach can enhance the efficiency and efficacy of research endeavors. Concurrently, it is incumbent upon society to actively engage in disease prevention efforts and promote disease awareness, thereby fostering a healthier environment. By assuming responsibility for preventive measures, society can afford the government the capacity to prioritize and allocate resources towards advancing medical research. Consequently, this concerted effort will contribute to the dual objectives of disease prevention and medical research, thereby promoting public health and well-being.
