In 1975, the most popular fast food among Australian teenagers was fish and chips, which were consumed an average of 100 times per year. In comparison, the number of pizzas and hamburgers consumed was significantly lower, at around 10 times each.
However, over the next five years, the consumption of fish and chips gradually decreased to just over 80 times before recovering to approximately 90 times. During the same period, hamburgers saw a remarkable increase, climbing from 10 to more than 80 times throughout the 1970s and into the 1980s. Pizza also experienced steady growth, increasing by around 25 times.
By 1995, hamburger consumption continued to rise, albeit minimally, adding another 10 times to reach a peak of 100. This made hamburgers the most consumed fast food in the following five years. Pizza also enjoyed a steady increase, reaching over 80 times, but its trend mirrored that of hamburgers, remaining unchanged until the end of the period.
Between 1985 and 2000, the consumption of fish and chips fell significantly, resulting in its status as the least popular fast food.
