The table compares the proportions of adults travelling for work or study by public transport in 7 cities in Australia in 1996 and 2006.
Overall, every city rose in the percentages of public transportation used by adults except for Hobart and Canberra whose figures declined.Sydney possessed the highest percentage of public transport use throughout. Moreover, Brisbane saw the most significant increase in the number, contrasting with Canberra which witnessed the most noticeable decrease.
In more detail, in 1996, 23% of adults in Sydney used public transport to go to work or study, which was also the largest proportion among all. Meanwhile, Melbourne and Hobart recorded the least proportions, only 11%, a half of Sydney’s rate.
In the next 10 years, the number of Sydney adults using public transport remained the highest, overshadowing others. Brisbane’s public transportation saw the greatest increase of 33%, rising to 16%, whereas Melbourne experienced the most negligible one. On the other hand, Canberra and Hobart’s percentages were the only two to drop. Adults in Canberra’s use of public transport for work or study fell the steepest, 33% and had the smallest number of 8% by the end. Hobart’s figure was slightly higher in 2006 though the Canberra rate of change doubled that of Hobart.
