The table compares the average distance travelled per person per year in the Netherlands by different modes of transport in 2001 and 2006.
Overall, cars were by far the most popular mode of transport in both years, and their usage increased significantly over the period. In contrast, walking and cycling showed slight declines, while most forms of public transport experienced growth.
In 2001, people travelled an average of 3,199 miles by car per year, and this figure rose sharply to 4,806 miles in 2006. Train travel also increased, from 239 miles to 366 miles. Similarly, the use of taxis more than tripled, rising from just 13 miles to 42 miles per person annually. Other modes of transport also saw an increase, from 450 to 585 miles.
By contrast, walking decreased slightly from 255 miles in 2001 to 237 miles in 2006, while bicycle use fell from 51 to 41 miles. Local bus travel declined notably from 429 miles to 274 miles, although local distance bus travel increased from 54 to 124 miles.
